The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is a mechanical chronograph wristwatch designed to meet the needs of racing drivers by measuring elapsed time and calculating average speed. Its name refers to Daytona, Florida, where Formula 1 racing flourished in the early 20th century. It has been manufactured by Rolex since 1963 in three distinct generations (or series); the second series was introduced in 1988, and the third in 2000. While cosmetically similar, the second series introduced a self-winding movement (the first series is hand-wound), and with the third series Rolex brought the manufacturing of the movement in-house.
The first series included an "exotic" variant dial now known as the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, named after the famous actor, who received the watch as a gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward, and popularized it by wearing it constantly while pursuing his racing career. Years later, the actor's watch, which he gifted to his daughter's boyfriend in 1984, was sold at auction in 2017 for a record (for wristwatches) $17.8 million. (As of December 2019, the most expensive watch ever sold at auction is the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime wristwatch (Ref. 6300A-010), fetching US$31.19 million (31,000,000 CHF) in Geneva on 9 November 2019).
The current Cosmograph Daytona is equipped with a tachymetric scale, a sweep seconds hand for reading to 1/8 of a second, and elapsed-time hours and minute displays. What’s unique about the Rolex calibre 4130 is the use of a vertical (rather than lateral) clutch to activate the chronograph. It was engineered to feature a reduced number of components for greater reliability. With a 40mm case, it is available in a variety of materials.
Rolex released three series of the Cosmograph Daytona. Prior to the release of the "Daytona", Rolex produced chronographs using movements sourced from outside manufacturers. They were housed in conventional and, starting in the 1940s, Oyster cases. Rolex introduced a more modern chronograph in 1955 (Ref 6234) and manufactured approximately 500 per year until 1961, the year it was discontinued. The dial of Reference 6234 was not marked "Cosmograph" or "Daytona". The reference (model) number is marked on the side of the case at the 12 o'clock position, where it is hidden under the strap lugs. The 6234 model has three smaller sub-dials, to mark the passage of seconds up to 60 seconds (at the 9 o'clock position), minutes up to 30 minutes (at the 3 o'clock position), and hours up to 12 hours (at the 6 o'clock position); all of these match the color of the main dial. It also featured a tachymeter scale on the outer chapter ring, and a telemeter scale on the inner chapter ring. Reference 6234 was succeeded by Reference 6238, which dropped the telemeter scale and updated its appearance to include many features that would be adopted by its successor 6239.
Rolex became the official timekeeper of the Daytona International Speedway in 1962, and to mark the occasion, Reference 6234 was replaced by Cosmograph Reference 6239, introduced in 1963 as the first chronograph from Rolex nicknamed "Daytona". However, the original Reference 6239 did not include "Daytona" on the dial (and was in fact nicknamed "Le Mans" for the famous 24 Hours Le Mans race). In addition to the chronograph details, the wristwatch featured a bezel engraved with a tachymeter, as the watch was intended for racing drivers.

We ship from our flagship store in Atlanta, GA. All orders are processed within 1-3 business days. Orders are not shipped or delivered on holidays.
If we are experiencing a high volume of orders, shipments may be delayed by a few days. Please allow additional days in transit for delivery. If there will be a significant delay in shipment of your order, we will contact you via email or telephone.
Shipping rates & delivery estimates
Shipping charges for your order will be calculated and displayed at checkout. We use USPS, FedEx and UPS and shipping carriers.
* Overnight delivery is only available for orders with delivery addresses within the continental United States.
Delivery delays can occasionally occur based on weather conditions.
Shipment to P.O. boxes or APO/FPO addresses
Swiss Luxury Watches ships to addresses within the U.S., U.S. Territories, and APO/FPO/DPO addresses.
Shipment confirmation & Order tracking
You will receive a Shipment Confirmation email once your order has shipped containing your tracking number(s). The tracking number will be active within 24 hours.
Customs, Duties and Taxes
Swiss Luxury Watches is not responsible for any customs and taxes applied to your order. All fees imposed during or after shipping are the responsibility of the customer (tariffs, taxes, etc.).
You are not liable for any products damaged or lost during shipping, in this unlikely event please call us and we will do our best to help locate the shipment or replace. If you received your order damaged, please contact the shipment carrier to file a claim.
Please save all packaging materials and damaged goods before filing a claim.
Returning Your Watch
Any watch purchased from Swiss Luxury Watches can be returned within the first 5 days of arrival. The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. Any items outside this window is cannot be returned and all those sales will be deemed final.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING POLICY
We currently DO NOT ship outside of the United States. Pricing and Delivery vary based on location.
We know the value of security, so every pre-owned watch we sell comes with a 12-month warranty alongside any remaining manufacturer's warranty. Should your watch develop any issues, through no fault of your own, then we shall repair it free of charge for the duration of your warranty. Please note our warranty doesn’t apply to new watches.
How Does the Warranty Work
- If you have any remaining manufacturer's warranty, then you can send your watch to them for repair either via us or via an authorized retailer.
- If your watch is covered by a Swiss Luxury Watches warranty only, then we will undertake the repairs in conjunction with the manufacturer where necessary.
- If your watch is not covered by any warranty then you can send it to us for a quote. Any work undertaken by us will be covered by a further 24-month Swiss Luxury Watches warranty.
Please note that our warranty covers manufacturing and mechanical defects only.
Our warranty is subject to the same terms and conditions as the manufacturer’s warranty. The standard manufacturer’s warranty does not cover theft or loss of the watch. Normal wear-and-tear or damage caused to the watch by accidents or mishandling/mistreatment are also excluded, as well as damage caused to a watch due to submersion in water which is against the manufacturer's guidelines. One particular example not covered by the warranty is the wear of the watch strap.
Any modification of a watch by the addition or substitution of components with aftermarket products which have not been provided by the manufacturer will also invalidate the warranty. The use of aftermarket components can severely compromise the technical performance, reliability and waterproofness of the watch.
Warranty return packs are sent directly to the service center, however you are free to deliver your warranty return to any Swiss Luxury Watches premises where it will be forwarded along to the service center directly. Please be advised that warranty return packs must be adequately insured at your own expense. The warranty is in addition to your statutory and common law rights.
What if My Watch Has a Problem
If your watch develops a fault, you can return it to us for inspection. If the repair is covered by your warranty, it will be undertaken free of charge. A member of the warranty team will then contact you to arrange the repair.
